چکیده

Basketball is a team game and a noncontact sport. It is a fast moving and aggressive game which requires lot of vertical jumps and multidirectional activities [1]. Taylor, 2004 found out that on an average a basketball player performs 1050 ± 51 movements in a game out of which 46±12 are vertical jumps [2]. As the game includes lot of vertical jumps and multidirectional activities, the injury rate is quite high [3]. The injury rate is as high as 7.9 injuries per 1000 athlete exposures (AEs) in females and 7.1 injuries per 1000 AEs in males [4]. Amongst all the injuries, ankle sprains are most common. The incidence of ankle sprains is greater than 80% in basketball players because of the nature of the game [5]. More than 90% of elite athletes reported a history of at least one ankle injury in their athletic career [6]. The common mechanism of injury is excessive supination of the rear foot on an externally rotated lower leg soon after the initial contact of the rear foot during gait or landing from a jump [7]. Lateral ankle sprains are based on grades 1-3. Grade 1 is microscopic tearing of ATFL, grade 2microscopic tearing of larger cross sectional portion of ATFL and grade 3complete rupture of the ATFL [8].

Biomechanical analysis of an inciting event of ankle sprain on basketball players

Introduction Lateral ankle sprains are very common among basketball players and are responsible for great time lost in practice. Nevertheless, having the same exposure to risk by playing basketball, some athletes never sprain their ankles while others do. The aim of this study is to understand the main kinematics an electromyography differences in basketball players during the dynamic activity ...

The role of shoe design in ankle sprain rates among collegiate basketball players.

CONTEXT Much of the recent focus in shoe design and engineering has been on improving athletic performance. Currently, this improvement has been in the form of "cushioned column systems," which are spring-like in design and located under the heel of the shoe in place of a conventional heel counter. Concerns have been raised about whether this design alteration has increased the incidence of ank...

The Prevalence of Selected Intrinsic Risk Factors for Ankle Sprain Among Elite Football and Basketball Players

BACKGROUND Lateral ankle sprains (LAS) are among the most common sports- related injuries and the reinjury rate is very high. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of some intrinsic risk factors among professional football and basketball players with or without history of acute or recurrent ankle sprain. PATIENTS AND METHODS One hundred and six professional football and bas...

Low range of ankle dorsiflexion predisposes for patellar tendinopathy in junior elite basketball players: a 1-year prospective study.

BACKGROUND Patellar tendinopathy (PT) is one of the most common reasons for sport-induced pain of the knee. Low ankle dorsiflexion range might predispose for PT because of load-bearing compensation in the patellar tendon. PURPOSE The purpose of this 1-year prospective study was to analyze if a low ankle dorsiflexion range increases the risk of developing PT for basketball players. STUDY DES...
